Dr Sunil Hirani passing WSLO exam July 2019 photo

Huge congratulations to our specialist orthodontist Dr Sunil Hirani for recently passing his World Society of Lingual Orthodontics (WSLO) exam.

Dr Hirani has been busy preparing for this prestigious qualification. The majority of specialists sitting the examination have practised lingual orthodontics for a minimum of 10 years.

We are extremely proud that Dr Hirani has achieved this accreditation.  He is currently the only consultant-trained specialist orthodontist in the UK to hold this qualification. An expert panel of lingual examiners from around the world assessed his cases, considering difficulty, standard of records, treatment planning skills, efficiency of treatment, outcome, cephalometric tracings and post-treatment stability. As of 2019, only 246 individuals have passed this exam worldwide so it’s a huge achievement.

The examination took place at the 8th WSLO Congress in Barcelona, Spain.  Dr Hirani was also an invited speaker and gave a presentation on Lingual lever arm mechanics and the current evidence.  This was extremely well received.

Lingual braces are braces that are fixed to the back of your teeth so they are very discreet and almost invisible.  We are very fortunate that we are able to offer this treatment to our patients here at SmileLux under the skilled and expert guidance of Dr Hirani. Dr Hirani is also the chairman of the British Lingual Orthodontic Society (BLOS).

If you would like to find out more about lingual brace treatment please contact SmileLux on 01908 398068.

He showed extremely difficult non-surgical and surgical Class II cases treated exceptionally well. The evening was packed full of clinical tips and a numerous variety of cases were shown.

The feedback from the entire group was rated as excellent and everybody enjoyed the evening. Dr Hirani would like to thank Dr Becker for sharing his extensive experience with the BLOS study club. We hope to host him again one day.

More training for SmileLux in the world of digital orthodontics

Monday, November 5th, 2018

It was our huge pleasure to host Charlie Laity from 3Shape for our recent in-house training. Their support is invaluable and the scanner is second to none.

We are looking forward to putting our new skills into practice!

Many patients worry about having impressions or moulds taken of their teeth as they can be uncomfortable, especially for people with a strong gag reflex. Technology is changing all the time and here at SmileLux in Milton Keynes we like to keep up to date with new techniques that can not only improve the clinical results we achieve, but also the comfort for patients. We now scan the teeth using a 3D digital scanner which is 100% accurate and enables us to treatment plan more effectively.

The 3Shape team (Orthodontic developers) visited Dr Sunil Hirani at SmileLux in April 2018. Several of them flew in directly from the 3Shape headquarters, Copenhagen, Denmark. Dr Hirani stated additional scanning functions he would like for the future and it was a pleasure to host the team. The following attended: Dale Flanagan, Jacob Birkelund, Charlie Laity and Dina and Cas-Julius. Our thanks to 3Shape for producing an excellent market leading scanner backed up by great support.

Dr Sunil Hirani attends the lecture entitled ‘Teeth with advanced bone loss: Is implant placement the best option for the patient?’ by Dr Kruti Desai.

BDA Meeting April 2018 - Lecture by Dr Kruti Desai.

Dr Sunil Hirani recently attended the above presentation in Milton Keynes and met Dr Kruti Desai and her husband Dr Pranay Patel.

The excellent lecture compared preservation of teeth versus dental implants. The evidence pointed towards preserving teeth rather than rushing into dental implants. Dental implants now have their own difficult complications to manage. This is peri-implantitis where the implant starts to fail. There is currently no universally agreed protocol for managing this disease. One in five implants will develop this disease.

The message is to clearly assess your patient, discuss all options available and advise them about the complications of dental implants. With excellent periodontal support, teeth of poor prognosis can have their life extended by another 5-10 years. This allows the patient to assess their options and save for costly treatment.

I thank Dr Kruti Desai for an excellent presentation as well as Dr K Patel for hosting the event.

Dr Sunil Hirani chairs the April 2018 BDA meeting in Milton Keynes- ‘Elevating your Clinical Practice with Digital Dentistry’ by Dr Rupert Austin.

Dr Hirani at April 2018 BDA meeting in Milton Keynes

It was an honour for Dr Sunil Hirani to host and chair Dr Rupert Austin at the BDA MK section meeting based at Milton Keynes Hospital on Thursday 12th April 2018. Dr Austin is a pioneering Clinical Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Prosthodontics from King’s College London Dental Institute (Guy’s Hospital). He is involved mainly with undergraduate teaching as well as supervising research projects and is leading the way in training the next generation of dental students in utilising digital scanning technology.

The presentation focused on the application of scanning within dentistry as well as analysing and comparing research outcomes from various scanners. It was wonderful to see Dr Hirani’s old dental school, Guy’s Hospital being the first school in the UK pushing this technology. Over time, students will have integrated access to scanners and be able to prepare for modern dentistry but still apply important core values and principles which are necessary as the basic foundation for success.
