Yellow teeth: What foods cause the teeth to stain?

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016

Discoloured teeth

It’s no big secret that our teeth can change colour with certain foods we eat. The celebrity world is full of dazzling bright smiles which makes us all more conscious of our own appearance. As human beings, we are all drawn to nice, shiny, clean looking teeth. Research has shown that a nice smile can help an individual be more successful throughout life in both their career and relationships.

The best way to maintain good oral hygiene and reduce the risk of staining is to ensure that you brush twice a day for a minimum of 2 minutes, floss or use interdental brushes daily and visit your dentist routinely to have the health of your teeth and gums checked.

You may also wish to consider that certain foods/drinks can actually cause your teeth to discolour over time or pick up surface staining. Below is a list of foods and drinks that could be the culprit:

England’s favourite, contains a plant compound called Tannins which over time can discolour your enamel (Tannins are found in oak and is used in tanning animal hides into leather, hence the word “tan” and “tanning”). Different types of tea can cause your teeth to turn different colours. For example; green tea can cause a grey appearance, black tea will cause a yellow appearance. It is said that the better quality the tea brand is, the less staining it will cause. Adding milk to your brew will also help prevent the discolouration of your teeth.

The UK population generally tend to follow American traditions and as a result of this people are now opting for a quick trip to Starbucks or Costa on route to work. Caffeine acts as a stimulant to help keep us alert for the day. Although coffee is generally not good for our health, it can also cause our precious teeth to stain over time. Coffee also contains Tannins (which are found in tea). It is also acidic and alters the pH balance in the mouth so any acidic foods you eat after can discolour your teeth more quickly.

Acidic fruits and foods

Foods that are high in acid such as oranges and tomatoes can cause your teeth to turn more yellow in colour. This is because regular consumption can cause erosion of the hard surface enamel that protects your teeth, this then causes the more yellowish coloured dentine to show through. You may also notice that your teeth become more prone to sensitivity. Try and limit your consumption of acidic foods to mealtimes only. Having acidic drinks/foods continuously throughout the day will put you at a higher risk of getting erosion and decay.

Yes, you guessed it, sweets are bad for your teeth! It is not just sweets themselves that cause harm, cookies, chocolate and even junk food like chips also contain sugar that coats your teeth and is a breeding ground for bad bacteria known as plaque which starts off as a creamy/yellow colour but if left for a long time can turn orange or even brown. When this bacteria feeds from the sugars left behind from sweets, it then releases acids which then leads to tooth decay. Decay appears dark brown or even black in colour which can be quite unsightly if this is present on the front of your teeth. If left untreated, decay can lead to more serious tooth issues such as fillings, root canal treatment and/or even the loss of a tooth.

Fizzy drinks

Just like sweets, fizzy drinks also contain high amounts of sugar giving the bacteria in your mouth something to enjoy! Fizzy drinks, diet or not, are especially damaging as they are carbonated and contain high levels of acid which leads to tooth decay. If you struggle to kick the habit of drinking fizzy drinks, try to have them with a meal instead of on their own and use a straw so it has less contact with your teeth.

Darker coloured fruits

Although fruits such as blueberries, blackberries and pomegranates are very good for you and release anti-oxidants, high consumption can cause our teeth to stain. Just like they would stain your clothes if you accidently dropped some of the juice on them, they will have the same impact on your teeth!

Red wine

If you are a fan of red wine, you may want to remember that it can cause your teeth to pick up grey stains. These stains can be much harder to remove than the yellowish stains. Red wine also contains the same tannins in tea and coffee.

White wine

Although white wine itself will not stain your teeth, it does contain high amounts of acid which can cause the enamel to erode over time. So if you fancy a glass, try and have it with a meal to again balance out the acidity and fight bacteria.

Regular consumption of curry can certainly cause staining of the teeth which is mainly due to the turmeric it contains. To avoid your teeth staining, try brushing your teeth after your meal or at the very least rinse around the mouth with water.

A Beautiful Smile For Valentines Day

Friday, February 14th, 2014

This Valentines Day there are a number of reasons to smile more! Research has shown that smiling will help you appear more attractive to people you meet and make you more approachable. Smiling is infectious and can improve your mood and the morale around you. So next time you are having a bad day, try forcing a smile to cheer yourself up, you never know who is around the corner!

Studies have shown that a smile has more impact on a first meeting than eyes, hair and body, therefore it is the most important physical feature in attracting a potential love interest. Smiling makes you appear younger as it lifts the muscles in your face and plumps the cheeks. It also gives you confidence.

Don’t take your smile for granted, smiling is a very important part of your life and benefits you in more ways than you may be aware of including relieving stress, improving your immune system and preventing you from looking tired and run down, overall improving your general well being. The following are the ways that helps you in improving your smile:

Good oral hygiene routine

Brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day to keep to keep bacteria and plaque away and keep your gums healthy. We recommend for best results to use an electric toothbrush.  It is also important to clean between your teeth using interdental brushes or floss at least once a day to get to the areas your toothbrush can’t. Unhealthy gums can cause bad breath which could be off putting on a first date!

Straight teeth

The best way to get straight teeth is by having orthodontic treatment which is conservative and preserves teeth in their natural state. Some people opt for veneers as a quick fix which is not recommended as this damages your healthy tooth tissue and requires replacement throughout your lifetime. Orthodontic treatment is a one-time investment which nowadays is very affordable due to convenient finance options.

If you are self conscious about your smile, you may have thought about cosmetic dental treatment to improve this. Orthodontics is a non invasive way to improve the appearance of your smile followed by whitening to brighten your teeth. As we are a Specialist Orthodontic Centre, we have a range of affordable hidden braces which means that there are no age limitations for people wanting a beautiful smile. Please contact a member of the SmileLux team for more information on how we may be able to help you today on 01908 398068.

White teeth

The most effective way to whiten your teeth is by having professional whitening treatment by your dentist. There are many products that can be bought off the shelf, however these are generally ineffective and contain very little whitening agent. We recommend having special customised trays made and using bleaching agent to maintain your white smile in the comfort of your own home. Please ask a member of the SmileLux team for more information on 01908 398068.

Lip Care

Make your lips kissable this Valentines Day with these helpful tips:

  • Avoid using cheap, flavoured chapsticks as these can cause your lips to dry out more.
  • Avoid using dark coloured lipstick as this can drain the colour from your face.
  • Stick to light pink lipsticks that appear softer and more attractive as they can bring out your features.
  • Always carry a good quality lip balm with you.
  • Wet your lips with water and seal quickly with lip balm. This will keep the moisture locked in for longer.
  • Mix a tablespoon of honey with enough sugar until you get a body-scrub like texture. Use a toothbrush to exfoliate your lips with the sugar scrub.

Food and Drink

Snacking on sugary foods throughout the day can cause tooth decay as your teeth are constantly being attacked with acids and bacteria. It takes 4 hours for saliva to clean your teeth and neutralise acid so constantly eating and drinking sugar means that your teeth are left vulnerable and prone to decay. Drink plenty of plain water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated. Fruit juices should be avoided between meals as they contain lots of sugar and citric acid. Also by drinking lots of water you will prevent getting bad breath.
