“I am so grateful to have found SmileLux. I was a nervous patient who hadn’t been to the dentist for a while. However Dr Hirani put me at ease from the very first appointment. He is very patient and explains what treatment options are available and the cost involved. I am very happy with the treatment I had, everyone at the practice made me feel so welcome and relaxed it has been a joy to go to the appointments. I would like to thank you all for your care and help. I would certainly recommend the procedure and practice to anyone.”

It is sometimes possible to put a brace on the front 6-8 teeth only which is known as sectional braces. This patient was happy with her bottom teeth and just wanted cosmetic improvement of her top front teeth as she disliked the gap. Whether a patient is suitable for sectional treatment depends on their bite and the result they are hoping to achieve. This treatment took 12 months and the patient chose lingual braces, behind the teeth.

To find out if sectional treatment is possible for you, contact a member of the SmileLux team today on 01908 398068. We have a range of braces in Milton Keynes suitable for every lifestyle.

Wonderful result with ceramic braces and dental implants

Our lovely patient Chanel was delighted with the transformation of her smile for her wedding. We used ceramic braces to realign her teeth and make space for two dental implants.

Often braces are used for function and not just cosmetic reasons, like in Chanel’s case. She now has a proper bite and is able to enjoy everyday life showing off her lovely new smile. Although we are an orthodontic practice, we can work with general dentists or restorative specialists to ensure the very best clinical result possible. Braces on their own are not always enough to improve a smile in the best possible way and a team of expertise is required.

If you are looking at getting the very best clinical result for your smile and have missing teeth, braces could be used to either close gaps or create more space for restorative treatments such as crown and bridgework or dental implants

Dr Sunil Hirani passes WSLO exam (World Society of Lingual Orthodontics)

Dr Sunil Hirani passing WSLO exam July 2019 photo

Huge congratulations to our specialist orthodontist Dr Sunil Hirani for recently passing his World Society of Lingual Orthodontics (WSLO) exam.

Dr Hirani has been busy preparing for this prestigious qualification. The majority of specialists sitting the examination have practised lingual orthodontics for a minimum of 10 years.

We are extremely proud that Dr Hirani has achieved this accreditation.  He is currently the only consultant-trained specialist orthodontist in the UK to hold this qualification. An expert panel of lingual examiners from around the world assessed his cases, considering difficulty, standard of records, treatment planning skills, efficiency of treatment, outcome, cephalometric tracings and post-treatment stability. As of 2019, only 246 individuals have passed this exam worldwide so it’s a huge achievement.

The examination took place at the 8th WSLO Congress in Barcelona, Spain.  Dr Hirani was also an invited speaker and gave a presentation on Lingual lever arm mechanics and the current evidence.  This was extremely well received.

Lingual braces are braces that are fixed to the back of your teeth so they are very discreet and almost invisible.  We are very fortunate that we are able to offer this treatment to our patients here at SmileLux under the skilled and expert guidance of Dr Hirani. Dr Hirani is also the chairman of the British Lingual Orthodontic Society (BLOS).

If you would like to find out more about lingual brace treatment please contact SmileLux on 01908 398068.

“When I started treatment, I was not confident with my smile. I had a lot of teeth removed as a young child and the experience left me feeling nervous about visiting the dentist and wishing that there had been an alternative to having so many teeth removed.
I wish I had taken up orthodontic treatment sooner. The results are amazing and this has transformed the shape of my teeth and restored confidence.
The experience at SmileLux has been positive throughout. The team are helpful and friendly and very efficient and attentive. Dr Hirani explains every step of the way and reassures you if you have any concerns. My personal orthodontic treatment took 3 years and it is certainly a commitment, but I am glad that I took that step and have felt confident throughout the treatment process that I am being well looked after. It has definitely been worth it. As a patient you will feel valued and cared for. The whole team work well together and you feel welcomed and assured.”

We see many different types of cases here at SmileLux in Milton Keynes, from the most simple alignment using a section of a brace to the most complex cases where full braces are required. We usually estimate that treatment would take a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 2 years however often if a case is extremely difficult, it may take longer. It also depends on how quickly a patient responds to the treatment, we often will not know this until treatment starts.

Our Specialist Orthodontist in Milton Keynes, Dr Sunil Hirani, has many years of experience in dealing with all different types of cases. Having originally trained to Hospital Consultant level, he still undergoes regular training and development to be one of the very best in his field and is proud to be able to offer this level of expertise to our patients to achieve such wonderful results.

“To the team, Thank you for all the hard work over the last 2 years and my new smile”

This lovely patient had ceramic braces to correct her crowded front teeth and to close her anterior open bite (when the front teeth do not close when biting). This type of bite can affect someone’s ability to bite into and chew food properly. People have orthodontic treatment for, not only cosmetic improvement, but also for function. If you have an issue with your bite that is causing you problems when eating, contact us today. We provide orthodontic treatment in Milton Keynes and have a range of both traditional and discreet brace options available. Contact a member of the SmileLux team on 01908 398068 to find out more about how we can help.

“From the very first moment I stepped into the practice I knew this was the place for me. Laura, in particular, was always so pleasant and empathetic and seemed genuinely pleased to see me. The practice is very attractive and I particularly liked the fact that appointments are arranged so that there is only ever 1 after person in the waiting area, if anyone there at all. Dr Hirani is very approachable and puts you at ease immediately. His attention to detail is amazing and he clearly wants the very best for his patients. He talks through all the procedures reassuring you about what is happening and what to expect post treatment. I spent almost 3 years having treatment and felt I had become part of this very slick team. This is a truly professional practice whose sole aim is to ensure that at the end of your treatment you are left smiling!”

If, like Tracie, you are considering orthodontic treatment to transform your smile, Invisalign may be a great option for you. The Truth about Fast Braces

Monday, October 1st, 2018

Start and finish line

There are many different products available on the market that claim to straighten the teeth in a few weeks or months and for a very small percentage of patients this could be the case. These patients may have had orthodontic treatment before and their teeth have moved very slightly or they may have very mild crowding.

With anything in life, if things are rushed mistakes can occur and the results may not be as good. It is the same with orthodontic treatment. We often see patients who have heavily invested in having their teeth straightened using these fast braces and then finding the results were not as good as they had hoped for so they have to have treatment all over again.

It is normal for most orthodontic cases to take 12-18 months depending on the complexity. If treatment involves the loss of teeth to make space this can mean treatment can take closer to 2 years or even longer. What people are often not told is that it is not just a case of straightening the part of the tooth you can see, the roots also need to be aligned properly which is what can often take the time. This is also to help with stability and longevity of the result.

It is important that 6-8 weeks are left between adjustment visits to allow the teeth to move safely and effectively before they are adjusted again.

If a patient does want their orthodontic treatment completed faster or to end their treatment before it is fully completed, they should be aware that they will may not be achieving the very best clinical result. This may be fine and acceptable for some people but it is often not the case and people are not told this before they commit to treatment.

This leads us to our next point of “Do your research”

The question we have to ask is, “Would you buy a car or electrical device without doing your research first?” If the question is no then why would you consider investing in a product to straighten your teeth without exploring all the options available to you?

In healthcare, the most important thing is to make sure you are being looked after in the best possible way. The smile is the main point of focus when speaking to people so getting the right result is essential.

A lot of people think that only the most complex cases are treated by a Specialist Orthodontist. This is not the case at all. Most of our patients are reassured that they are in the safest of hands by a Specialist Orthodontist who has undertaken several years of intense training rather than someone who has taken a day course in the art of Orthodontics.

At SmileLux we specialise in braces and this means that we can offer a range of different options to suit every lifestyle, expectation and budget. We strive to achieve the very best result for all our patients and are always open and honest when things cannot be achieved.

If you would like braces and want to know you are in the very best hands, contact the SmileLux team today on 01908 398068 where a member of our friendly team will be delighted to help you. We offer orthodontic treatment in Milton Keynes for patients of all ages and have a range of different types of braces from the traditional metal braces to ones that are behind the teeth and fully invisible.

Different types of Invisalign treatments

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is a very different style of orthodontic treatment from the traditional fixed braces. It is a fully bespoke, removable brace system where fabricated trays (known as aligners) are made for you. The greatest benefit of this treatment is that it is virtually invisible therefore nobody need even know you are having treatment!

You wear each set of aligners for two weeks and then change to the next set. Each set is very slightly different and a gradual movement occurs where your teeth are able to move into their ideal position. Before you decide to proceed with the treatment, moulds are taken and sent to the Invisalign laboratory. They create a computerised simulation that will show you what your teeth will look like after treatment and will also determine how many aligners you will need. Each aligner is changed every two weeks; therefore the simulation will give you a guide as to how long your treatment is expected to take. This is usually determined by the complexity of the treatment and the results you and your orthodontist are hoping to achieve.

Invisalign should be worn for a minimum of 22 hours per day to achieve the very best clinical results and to ensure that your treatment runs smoothly and promptly. You must remove the aligners when you eat and drink anything other than cold water as the aligners are delicate and can be easily damaged. It is very important to maintain good oral hygiene and keep both your teeth and the aligners very clean to prevent dental problems arising such as tooth decay or plaque.

The different types of Invisalign treatment ranges are listed below:

Invisalign full

Most standard treatments would fall into this category where more than 14 aligners are required. Treatment time can vary from 28 weeks to 2-3 years+ for the more complex cases.

Invisalign Teen

Invisalign is available for teenagers between the ages of 12 and 19. It works in the same way as Invisalign full but has added benefits for parents such as blue indicators at the back of the aligners that fades from blue to clear. This helps parents and the orthodontist easily check if the aligners are being worn as they should.

Invisalign Lite

This is designed for less complex cases requiring no more than 14 aligners. This means that treatment time is shorter and can often be completed within 6 months. It is also possible to just treat the upper or lower teeth alone. They are generally suitable for patients who have minor orthodontic issues such as slight overcrowding or small gaps between the teeth.

Invisalign I7

Ideal for extremely mild cases requiring less than 7 aligners. This means treatment time can be as little as just 3 months. Invisalign I7 generally only moves the front 6 teeth.
