How early should children see an Orthodontist?

Children should be monitored as young as age 7 for future orthodontic treatment. Often actual treatment will not start until a child has all their adult teeth however early intervention can sometimes be recommended while the jaw is still growing. This can eliminate the need for more obtrusive treatment in adulthood such as jaw surgery.

Here are some early warning signs that your child should see an Orthodontist:

  1. Thumb/ finger sucking or prolonged use of a dummy
  2. Wonky teeth
  3. Sticking out teeth (known as an overjet)
  4. Deep bite (when the top teeth almost completely cover the bottom teeth when biting)
  5. Early or late loss of baby teeth
  6. Speech difficulties
  7. Problems with eating due to the bite
  8. Grinding or clenching of teeth
  9. Missing teeth
  10. Signs of tooth wear

Happy Halloween from The SmileLux Team

Monday, October 27th, 2014

It’s that time of year again………………Halloween!! I am sure you are getting ready to go trick or treating over the next few days and the children are getting excited about getting lots of sweets.

Please remember how damaging sweets can be to your teeth, especially when wearing a brace. You may want to follow this useful advice to make sure that your (and your children’s) teeth stay healthy this Halloween:

1. Monitor how many houses are visited whist trick or treating.
2. Try and limit sweet eating to meal times only and ensure that you brush your teeth 20-30 minutes after eating them. If this is not possible, use a fluoride mouthwash.
3. Ensure you brush your teeth thoroughly before bedtime for a minimum of 2 minutes.
4. Clean between your teeth using dental floss (if possible) or TePe brushes. Ideally this should be done before brushing your teeth at bedtime.

If you feel your smile is “scary” and would like this to be transformed this Halloween, contact a member of the SmileLux team today on 01908 398068. We have a range of discreet orthodontic options available and would be delighted to discuss these with you in more detail over a coffee.
