This Valentines Day there are a number of reasons to smile more! Research has shown that smiling will help you appear more attractive to people you meet and make you more approachable. Smiling is infectious and can improve your mood and the morale around you. So next time you are having a bad day, try forcing a smile to cheer yourself up, you never know who is around the corner!

Studies have shown that a smile has more impact on a first meeting than eyes, hair and body, therefore it is the most important physical feature in attracting a potential love interest. Smiling makes you appear younger as it lifts the muscles in your face and plumps the cheeks. It also gives you confidence.

Don’t take your smile for granted, smiling is a very important part of your life and benefits you in more ways than you may be aware of including relieving stress, improving your immune system and preventing you from looking tired and run down, overall improving your general well being. The following are the ways that helps you in improving your smile:

Good oral hygiene routine

Brush your teeth for two minutes at least twice a day to keep to keep bacteria and plaque away and keep your gums healthy. We recommend for best results to use an electric toothbrush.  It is also important to clean between your teeth using interdental brushes or floss at least once a day to get to the areas your toothbrush can’t. Unhealthy gums can cause bad breath which could be off putting on a first date!

The most effective way to whiten your teeth is by having professional whitening treatment by your dentist. There are many products that can be bought off the shelf, however these are generally ineffective and contain very little whitening agent. We recommend having special customised trays made and using bleaching agent to maintain your white smile in the comfort of your own home. Make your lips kissable this Valentines Day with these helpful tips:

  • Avoid using cheap, flavoured chapsticks as these can cause your lips to dry out more.
  • Avoid using dark coloured lipstick as this can drain the colour from your face.
  • Stick to light pink lipsticks that appear softer and more attractive as they can bring out your features.
  • Always carry a good quality lip balm with you.
  • Wet your lips with water and seal quickly with lip balm. This will keep the moisture locked in for longer.
  • Mix a tablespoon of honey with enough sugar until you get a body-scrub like texture. Use a toothbrush to exfoliate your lips with the sugar scrub.

Food and Drink

Snacking on sugary foods throughout the day can cause tooth decay as your teeth are constantly being attacked with acids and bacteria. It takes 4 hours for saliva to clean your teeth and neutralise acid so constantly eating and drinking sugar means that your teeth are left vulnerable and prone to decay. Drink plenty of plain water throughout the day to keep your body hydrated. Fruit juices should be avoided between meals as they contain lots of sugar and citric acid. Also by drinking lots of water you will prevent getting bad breath.
