Common orthodontic problems

Common issues we treat
at SmileLux

At SmileLux, we combine our expertise with the latest technology to treat even the most complex orthodontic cases. Here are some of the common problems we can help correct with specialist treatment.

Crowding
Crowding

Crowding is caused by teeth that overlap or are pushed tightly together because there isn’t enough room in the jaw. This can easily be treated with expanders, brace treatment and, less commonly, extraction.

Spacing
Spacing

Spacing is the opposite of crowding. It’s when there are gaps between your teeth because of extra space or missing permanent teeth. This is a common issue that can be treated with braces or aligners.

Overbites
Overbites

When the upper front teeth overlap the lower front teeth vertically more than normal, this is called an overbite. Overbites can put your top teeth at risk of injury, so it is important to correct this issue with orthodontic treatment.

Underbites
Underbites

When your lower teeth sit in front of your upper teeth, this is called an underbite. This can lead to uneven tooth wear, difficulty chewing and TMJ issues. This issue is much easier to treat with early intervention orthodontics.

Crossbites
Crossbites

When one or more of your teeth cross over each other, this is called a crossbite. This misalignment can affect facial symmetry and cause uneven tooth wear.

Deep bites
Deep bites

Deep bite is the term for a dramatic overbite. In severe cases, the lower teeth may bite into the roof of the mouth. This is one of the most damaging orthodontic issues and should be treated as early as possible.

Open bites
Open bites

An open bite occurs when the upper and lower teeth don’t meet when the mouth is closed. This gap most often appears at the front but can also affect the back teeth. Open bites may lead to uneven tooth wear, jaw joint discomfort and difficulties with speaking and chewing.
