Functional appliances are often used at the start of orthodontic treatment. Their main purpose is to aid the proper growth of young jaws, so that they align properly.
Functional appliances are used before - and in conjunction with - comprehensive orthodontic treatment, and can significantly shorten the time your child spends in braces or aligners.
Types of functional appliances
The two most common functional appliances we use here at SmileLux are the Twin Block and Herbst appliances. If this type of treatment is recommended for your child, Dr Hirani will discuss the most appropriate functional appliance during your child’s consultation with us.
Twin Block appliance
The Twin Block appliance is a powerful, removable brace used to straighten protruding top teeth. The appliance is designed to encourage the lower jaw to grow forwards, improve muscle function and correct the relationships of the front and back teeth.
Herbst appliance
The Herbst appliance is a fixed appliance which is often used in conjunction with braces. It helps the lower jaw develop in a forward direction to correct overbites in young patients.
